Applications

PCLinuxOS comes with many applications pre-installed. More are available in the PCLinuxOS official repositories. They can be installed using the easy-to-use Synaptic Software Manager. Applications are added and updated quite regularly.

Hardware

PCLinuxOS has a Hardware Database where users can rate and comment about working or non-working hardware. This site also serves as a place to check if your existing hardware may work. This site is solely dependent on user submissions, so if your hardware is not listed do not fret, it just may not be submitted yet. If you try PCLinuxOS and your hardware does work, please do a submission.

Screenshots

More software can be installed, and there are lots of options for personalizing your installation, but here are some teaser screenshots: Click on one to see a larger image.

Remasters

PCLinuxOS can be easily "remastered" to easily create a LiveCD backup of your installation or for an advanced user to create their own customized PCLinuxOS distribution.

Several "remasters" of PCLinuxOS exist to cater to more specialized needs:

  • TinyME is a minimal remaster of PCLinuxOS. It exists to ease installation of PCLinuxOS on older computers, provide a minimal installation for developers to play with, and provide a fast Linux installation for where only the bare essentials are needed.
  • SAM Linux is a light PCLinuxOS remaster using the XFCE desktop interface.
  • MythTVOS based on PCLOS-Gnome or MiniMe-KDE and providing a preconfigured MythTV setup for multimedia junkies !

(See remasters for the complete list)

Localization

While PCLinuxOS is currently English-only, there is growing interest from non-English speakers. A number of localization projects have begun, and several non-English websites have appeared.

More help is needed for the localization efforts. Please see the contacts listed in localization.

Customize

The MiniMe iso is a minimal livecd that is bootable and can be installed. It comes with a very basic KDE desktop without additional applications. It is designed for advanced users or for users who wish to learn how to customize their system with the applications and support files they want to use. Additional software can be installed through the Synaptic Software Manager (requires network connection). Add your own background, window decorations, web browser client, email client, music client and fully trick out your desktop the way you want it.

  • Mini really is more for the advanced level users, folks who know exactly what they want, how to get what they want installed, tune the apps mine types, file associations, etc.
  • If you are still interested ? refer to the MiniME page
